Joel Salatin

Joel Salatin is a third generation beyond organic farmer and author whose family owns and operates Polyface Farm in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.

The farm services more than 5,000 families, 10 retail outlets, and 50 restaurants through on-farm sales and metropolitan buying clubs with salad bar beef, pastured poultry, eggmobile eggs, pigaerator pork, forage-based rabbits, pastured turkey and forestry products using relationship marketing.

He holds a BA degree in English and writes extensively in magazines such as STOCKMAN GRASS FARMER and ACRES USA

The family's farm, Polyface Inc. (The Farm of Many Faces) has been featured in SMITHSONIAN MAGAZINE, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, GOURMET sustaining vision and countless other radio,television and print media. Profiled on the Lives of the 21st Century series with Peter Jennings on ABC World News, his after-broadcast chat room fielded more hits than any other segment to date.

A prolific author, Salatin's nine books to date (website) include both how-to and big picture themes. The farm

features prominently in Michael Pollan's NYT bestseller Omnivore's Dilemma, FRESH The Movie, and the award-winning documentary, Food Inc.

'Who inspires you?' is a common question people ask me. A handful of names comes to mind, and one of them is Allan Savory. When he first came to the U.S. I read his material and immediately felt affirmed in what our family had been doing, but also challenged to do better. Every time I meet Allan, whether through the written word, one of his proteges, as an audience member at a presentation, or informally conversing with him, I'm convicted to think better, speak better, and farm better. Few people have had such a profound positive influence on my life and I count it a distinct honor to have lived when Allan's shadow could be cast on me.
